Abol Bridge Campground Store

Description

Perched on a river with sweeping mountain views, this remote campground offers dramatic scenery, wildlife, direct water access for swimming and fishing, nearby hikes and striking natural features. Amenities include a well-stocked store and tasty ice cream, clean showers, restrooms and included breakfasts; staff are generally friendly. Caveats: per-person pricing and some noisy bridge-side sites, spotty phone/website information, four-wheel-drive access and conflicting firewood/site-capacity policies have caused problems for visitors — verify rules before arrival.

I stayed here during the pandemic in June 2020 and had a great experience. The views of the Allagash Waterway and Mount Katahdin were absolutely stunning. The restrooms and showers were clean and well-maintained, and the complimentary breakfast was just what we needed. I would definitely choose to stay here again.

This is a fantastic campground with stunning views of Katahdin and the river. While the prices might be on the higher side since they are charged per person, they do include a lovely breakfast and clean restrooms/showers. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. A couple of things to keep in mind: the bathrooms lack hand soap, and it’s best to avoid sites 13 and 15, as they are located right next to the bridge and experience loud truck traffic throughout the night.

Excellent selection of craft beers along with all the essentials.

This is a stunning location that gives off a remote, almost apocalyptic vibe. The store was well-stocked with nearly everything I needed, and the ice cream was quite tasty. However, I found the tent sites to be a bit pricey; it might be a good idea to have a designated area for hikers. On a positive note, the showers were fantastic!

The store sells firewood, even though they know you can't bring it into the campsite. Rangers have informed me that the store is a scam and forced me to dispose of the wood I had just purchased. Additionally, the website states that each site accommodates 4-6 people, but the rangers insisted this information was incorrect and made me pay for another site for 5 people. Unfortunately, there were no additional sites available, so after a long day of hiking, I couldn't stay and had to drive 7 hours overnight to get home. Despite this, the store kept the money for the site I had already rented.
