The owners/cooks/waiters/bartenders are twins called Mario and Luigi. If this isn't enough to attract you to the California, read on. The guys don't wear red and green, but keep a solid eatery running on the principle of feeding customers well and fast. The menu is handwritten prior to the meal being served but always features among others a first course of pasta with Ragù (meat) or Arrabbiata (spicy tomato) sauce, and several second courses, usually involving veal, chicken, pork chops and, occasionally, other fowl. The bill is always the fixed price, so forget about the cost of each dish. Extras are more wine, dessert (chocolate salami) and spirits. Whoever knows the brothers knows their no-nonsense attitude to the restaurant business. You're in their home, their entirely family-operated business with a ton of loyal regulars from the surrounding area. Their service is fast, courteous and the food is delicious. Do not expect frills such as wifi, a lengthy wine list or substitutions to your heart's content. What you will get, however, is true home cooking at a fantastic price. Vegetarians might have to ask for 2 first courses as the second courses rarely feature anything veggie. California is as local as it gets, and I love it for exactly that reason. If in doubt, bring an Italian friend or a dictionary app to help with ordering.
They have a menu that changes everyday and comprehends dishes from the northern part of Italy. Try the pork shin, the tripe, the raw meat, vitello tonnato and don’t forget to ask for the gorgeous chocolate desert! Drinks are included (vine, beer, sodas) as well as coffee and the price is very good!
