Beautiful architectural complex dating back to 1784 which defines access to the historic center of Mesagne. DESCRIPTION: Porta Grande located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Mesagne was built in 1784 on the remains of an ancient gate. The reconstruction of Porta Grande was commissioned by the University of Mesagne. Porta Grande, enclosed between the doors of a huge gate, remains today the main testimony of what were the walls, with its towers and its walks. Porta Grande, also called Porta Napoli, according to the notary acts of the time, presented epigraphs, bas-reliefs, the civic arme and that of the feudal ones of the time. It was probably part of the imposing wall circuit of which the city of Mesagne was equipped since the 13th century, defended by a moat and numerous guard towers. The current door is made of carparo axes left to display. The vault of the arch presents the coat of arms of the University of Mesagne, depicting a palm with two ears of wheat. The other entrance, instead, south of the old town, called Porta Piccola, now missing. From Porta Grande you can access the historic centre of Mesagne.
