I have now been to Henry Sugar 3 times. It is located in a beautiful part of Melbourne with parking reasonably easy to find close by. The restaurant is fitted out to have a very cosy and intimate local atmosphere. On two occasions we have had the chef's menu and found the food to be both creative and delicious, yet not too expensive.I can highly recommend Henry Sugar. I love this place, both the food and drinks were amazing! I would definitely recommend. My friend was coeliac and lactose intolerant, we told them when we made the booking and they were more than happy to accomodate.
Chef Michael Baker has turned up in Melbourne and is now a joint owner of this great addition to the Melbourne restaurant scene. Michael used to work at one of Wellington's finest restaurants The Larder where he was the deserts guy. He then worked a few years as a chef on super yachts in the Mediterranean and restaurants in Spain. All these influences are apparent at Henry Sugar. The food was excellent and the service first rate. The excellent meal began with the best bread and butter I have ever had in Australia and continues right through. My only regrets were eating too much to squeeze in the Spanish chocolate tart on the desert menu and the lack of a nice New Zealand Pinot Noir on the wine list. Henry sugar is a bit of a trek from the CBD but is well worth it.
I can't explain how delicious the bread is. It's insanely fresh, melt in your mouth kinda stuff. The crust is mind-blowing, it's really, truly something else. And the tomato butter? So good. Any who, enough about the bread. My boy friend & I came in for my birthday dinner and were delighted to have chosen the tasting menu. It's easily the best value in town, paying only $60 pp. for approximately five or so courses. I doubt it will stay so reasonably priced for long.We indulged in the aperitif cocktail with our bread and lentil parfait. Yes, lentil. Which was awesome because I love parfait but can't get my head around it so don't normally eat it. But this one was vegetarian and as a result I basically inhaled it. We couldn't believe the flavour.Next we tried the squid and chorizo dish, which was served with the charred broccoli as a side dish. The broccoli. Wow. This course was definitely a sight to see, satisfying the taste buds too. We had a glass of resiling with this course. The steak and mushies came next (definitely not the technical name for the dish), but there was some incredible vinaigrette business going on here, which was perfect for cutting through the richness of the enoki and red meat. This was paired with parmesan crusted chips and roast shallot mayo. Our bartender recommended the syrah by the glass. My partner then had a local dark beer off tap and I decided on an amaro for a digestive. Dessert was a great mix of a classic and something a little different. We started with something a little different; there was olive oil and sorbets and a granita. I can't remember the flavours exactly but it was a nice palate cleanser. And then came the creme brûlée, which I think was served as a little extra birthday treat as it came complete with a candle and singing wait staff. Thanks Henry Sugar. Such a marvellous experience, I thought about it for days. Can't wait to return.
On my recent visit to Melbourne I had dinner at Henry Sugar. Chose the tasting menu. It was an excellent choice. The food was fantastic. Had the last Black Forest desert for the season. Definitely have to go back next season, it was so good.Had a cocktail before dinner, and that was really enjoyable too. The staff was attentive, and the service was fast despite the place being very busy.
