We were attending the opera at the Arts Centre, there was an option for a pre show themed dinner and wines to match the opera, we had dietary requirements which did not match the menu, my wife gluten free, and myself no shellfish. There was no fuss made in accomodating our needs, as we know sometimes it becomes a nuisance for the place you're eating! The food was excellent, service great, staff very busy but still ab... I've been to cafe vic many times over many years and through many iterations. It is very convenient for a pre-show meal and a lovely space but the experience is very variable and way too pricy for what you get. Last night was plain ordinary. A cold piece of beef, dry duck, and an old lamb shank. Only the salmon was any good. For the prices it should be better.
Service was fast and friendly, but food obviously pre cooked, and kept warm for quick turnover, more like a meal from a cafeteria making it a very expensive cafeteria. My duck was overcooked and rather dry
The convenience of the location for events in the Arts Centre has always been the major attraction to of this restaurant. However the food can be a hit or miss experience with this visit sadly the latter. We understand that they are catering to large numbers in a limited time span which means the pre prepared food can be overcooked. On this occasion the confit duck with duck fat chips was exactly that. At the prices charged there is no excuse for soggy potatos which should be extremely crisp. As for the steak is was simply overcooked again at prices which should show better preparation. Also I do not understand why staff need to seat you on top of the next tables when there is less than 1/3 of the restaurant filled
Melbourne has such a great Arts precinct it is a pity that Cafe Vic things they can serve such poor food. Not only was the beef Wellington, dry, over cooked it was cold. This felt worse than nursing home food. The desert didn't match the description on the menu and to add insult to injury it was grossly over priced. Melbourne I know you can do better! Even for convenience of seeing a show I would not eat here again.
