We were staying on Essex St in between two coffee shops - Brother Nancy and West 48. I frequented both and although West 48 has the better atmosphere, Brother Nancy has the better coffee. View all feedback.
What Dallas Klein doesn't like about Brother Nancy:
I was here a day earlier and enjoyed a nice breakfast. I love eating and thought I would make this one of my regular stains. I was sadly disappointed when I arrived and sat outside, waiting and waiting and waiting. 30 minutes was mine. After I tried to make an eye contact with a coworker who plays around with her display cabinet, I thought I finally succeeded when the chef noticed me. nothing. that is, this area has... Amazing service, friendly and nothing was too much. All we wanted, they matched with a smile (through a mask natural). the breakfast was great and good value. coffee amazing and overall an amazing local experience. we're coming back, maybe lunch. This time!
I am not a local however stopped by on a beautiful winters Sunday while my daughter played soccer around the corner.Decided to order to go.Soup of the day, artichoke with speck. My goodness it was lovely with the crusty bread (only downside was the small sizing served).A small busy cafe with friendly staff and a bustling clientele.
Popped in today to have a light family lunch with our son who lives nearby. Hadn't booked but this wasn't a problem, as the lady greeting us quickly directed us to a table.. Menus at hand and water brought to table (and replenished too without having to ask) . Delightful fellow came for our orders, with great people skills ... not always a 'given' in the hospitality industry I have sadly found. But here at Brother Nancy it was perfect. We were impressed with the varied offerings on the menu ... and chose two of the burgers and two of the pesto chicken bruschetta. Meal was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented and served with a smile. We had been warned that there would be a slight wait for the chicken, but honestly did not notice the wait at all. Coffee afterwards lived up to the reviews we had seen on social media, and hubby thoroughly enjoyed his accompanying yo-yo ... homemade and yum ... top marks :) Altogether a lovely experience ... highly recommend this place for not only its food, but the ambiance and most importantly the wonderful staff. A great all round positive experience ...
The style of menu here is just what I like - food that is exciting and different. Green eggs and ham with pork belly and mushroom foam, breakfast carbonara with a baked egg yolk, reuben sandwich with wagyu pastrami. Loved it all - flavourful and well thought through. Only negatives were the reuben wasn't actually a reuben (it had coleslaw) and the pastrami wasn't cut very generously (wasnt much meat). Will definitely be returning to try the rest of the menu tho
Coffee weak, you should be able to get a coffee that doesn't taste like warm milk. Girlfriend ordered a vegetarian variant of a breakfast, we both tried the eggs and they were a watery funny texture, sent them back. The host was reasonable and didn't charge, however he still put on a show trying to tell us how good his French chef was, it's a bit you know what, i told him to try the eggs and he refused. I wouldn't bother with this place, go to west 48 or the jellybean cafe instead.
