I'm going to get straight to the point with this one - go! Go, and eat all of the food. We got a ridiculous amount of food between the two of us, which we obviously didn't finish, but it was totally worth it to get to taste so much!Ribs, brisket and smoked jackfruit - all stellar, and for once the side dishes shone just as bright as the meats. Where other barbecue restaurants seem to offer their sides as more of an afterthought, Bluebonnet definitely put a lot of focus on theirs. The potato salad in particular....so good! Didn't try anything from the cocktail list on this occasion, but they offer and interesting selection of beers and a good choice of wines too. Good job we don't live in Melbourne, because having this place as our local would be dangerous!
As I drive closer and closer to meet my tall handsome date I cannot contain the excitement rising inside me. My heart begins to race, my stomach is a flutter and I can almost taste the tender, succulent morsels of Texas style barbecued meat. Mmmm barbecued meat, ooh am I drooling? Yes, yes I am.Taking the short walk from my car in the quiet residential streets of Fitzroy North I feel as though I have stumbled upon one of Melbourne’s hidden gems. Bluebonnet Barbeque is a beautiful old pub that has the perfect blend of rustic yet modern interior. Sitting at my table looking around the room at all of the eager eaters I begin to experience the ambiance created by the lighting that seem set to the perfect mood for an intimate evening, hang on is that my date? Did he just walk past me? He did just walk past me!Never mind for my tall handsome date wastes no time in making me laugh. I look up at him with an insatiable hunger in my eyes lean forward and ask “what are you ordering?” He leans in close and replies, “I can’t decide.” Perusing the menu I feel like a kid in a candy store, so many delicious meat dishes to choose from, how does one choose? Just as my date and I are about to have a melt down not knowing where to start with the menu the lovely waitress advises that 200g of meat per person with a couple of sides to share is usually enough. With this most expert advice we finally decide on the ever so romantic option of sharing our meat and order 100g of Smoked Black Angus Brisket, Smoked Berkshire Pulled Pork, Crispy Lamb Ribs, Daily House made Snag and for the side the Cheddar
