The best Bacalhau dish in town! The Bahalhau a bras da Silva was just spectacular! Very nice host and atmosphere for families!
We visited O Mercado based on recommendation from the Casa do Côro Hotel. Some of the staff from the hotel also had dinner at O Mercado on the same evening, which we saw as a good sign. We arrived early on a Thursday evening, without a reservation, and received a warm friendly welcome, and the barman quickly re-arrange some tables to make room for us. The barman spoke good English, so our very limited Portuguese was not an issue. The bar has a good selection of Gins as well as excellent choices of wine covering all price points. The menu was quite simple, with a clear focus on Steaks, so we selected the Posta to share (bargain at €21). We were given olives and bread to enjoy with our drink, and the restaurant quickly filled with local families (another good sign). The steak was prepared exactly as we had ordered, well seasoned, and very tender. The sides were quite simple, but perfectly cooked, and did not distract from the main event. With the restaurant now full, the atmosphere was jovial, and the waiter made sure everything was OK, bringing us some excellent Douro wine, at €9 for the bottle. The deserts and cheese were delicious, we were unable to finish our wine, but the barman was quite happy to supply the cork so we could finish back at our hotel. If you in the area, and love steak, then do seek out O Mercado, you will not be disappointed.
