I ordered the brisket sandwich and sweet potato fries, but the sandwich had an odd texture in my mouth. After a few bites, I discovered that the meat had small pieces of aluminum foil mixed in. My hotel, The Cobblestone Inn and Suites, recommended the Backwoods Bar and Grill, but I really hope they stop doing so!
The waitstaff did a wonderful job welcoming us and seated us at a dirty table. I understood that many places were busy that night, and I appreciated that they worked together to clean it off while we patiently waited, though it was evident they were also a bit overwhelmed with large tables to serve. We kindly asked for menus while waiting, and they provided them without hesitation. Since I'm on a specific medical diet, I inquired about some ingredients in the menu items. Unfortunately, the waitress didn’t seem to know and was reluctant to ask the cook or manager for clarification. To avoid causing them too much trouble during such a busy time, I chose something I thought would work: a plain steak and some French fries. When the fries arrived, they were pre-seasoned, and possibly battered, which I couldn’t eat due to my dietary restrictions. The menu didn’t indicate that the fries were seasoned, and the waitress didn’t inform me, or I would have opted for a plain baked potato instead. As a result, I ended up just eating the steak and drinking water, as I couldn’t make any other accommodations for my diet. Aside from those issues, everything else seemed fine until we went to pay the bill. The person handling the register looked at our receipt and the debit card my husband placed down, then abruptly told him, "We don’t accept cards," and returned to counting her money without further explanation. We were both embarrassed and a bit shocked, as we didn’t have cash on hand. The waitress never informed us that it was a cash-only establishment before we ordered.
This place is an incredible throwback to the past! It feels like we've traveled back to the 1800s. I truly appreciate the overall experience here. We make it a point to visit every year. If you're fortunate enough to get a room, you'll understand what I mean. You can drop by just for a meal, stay for a bite, or enjoy a few drinks! It's a unique cultural experience, and it’s definitely not your typical Holiday Inn. You really have to embrace the Old West vibe to appreciate it, in my opinion.
I ordered the half slab of smoked ribs and they were fantastic. I also tried the potato salad. My wife enjoyed the baked cod, topped with melted cheese and garlic, and she said it was excellent as well.
I was really excited to try Backwoods Grill because of its unique exterior. When I walked in, only a few tables were occupied, and a group of four at the bar was getting ready to leave. I sat at the bar next to them, with my back to the door. A server acknowledged me but said they were a bit busy and to give her some time. I waited patiently. After a few minutes, I overheard the same server taking an order behind me, but I still hadn't been helped. Meanwhile, another staff member was busy dealing with register issues, moving back and forth to the back several times. We made eye contact a few times, but she didn’t say a word. The first server passed by me several more times, promising twice that she’d be with me soon, and I even saw her wiping a tray at the end of the bar. I started wondering why she hadn’t come back to me yet. Looking around, no new customers had arrived except for the couple who came in a bit later and sat right next to me. They were greeted immediately, offered drinks, and given menus. But there I was, still waiting, a little brown girl who hadn’t even been offered a drink or a menu.
