Rex Cafe Bakery - McAllen
Rex Cafe Bakery
Description
**Dining at a Nostalgic Establishment: A Mixed Bag Experience**
Nestled in a setting reminiscent of the past, this restaurant offers a diverse menu that reflects its long-standing tradition. While some patrons rave about the delightful breakfast options and fresh pastries—particularly the unique semitas and conchas—others report disappointing experiences with dishes like chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. The ambiance, steeped in nostalgia, still requires improvement, as concerns about cleanliness and maintenance impede the dining experience. With prices that seem reasonable for the offerings, the inconsistency in food quality leaves diners questioning whether their memories will match reality on their next visit.

Historic Cafe in downtown McAllen! Delicious food and vintage atmosphere. Lunch specials available every day. Pan dulce available too.
I had to visit this gem. The last time I was here was in 1974. My mother took there every Sunday after church for biscuits and hot chocolate. I must say this place still got it!! If you are ever in the valley you must stop in for breakfast, brunch or simply coffee and their amazing pastries. The chilaquiles and huevos rancheros were on point!
Everything is always cooked fresh on the spot, hot, and perfect. The food is very tasty—I can't complain at all!
I ordered the chilaquiles while my parents opted for a beef ranchero and pork chops. Unfortunately, my chilaquiles were underwhelming, even worse than I expected. Given the poor condition of the place, I hoped the food would be better, but the chilaquiles were cold inside, while the cheese was hot—clearly heated in the microwave. The carnitas were chewy, and the pork chops lacked flavor. Our total bill came to $60 for three entrees, two menudos, coffee, and a pastry. While I suppose the price is fair, the food and overall atmosphere left much to be desired. I'd much rather grab breakfast tacos from a place like Stripes instead.
I ordered the fajita taco plate, and it was absolutely delicious! It came with rice and beans, along with lettuce, onions, and salsa. I also received a bowl of soup as a starter, which was a nice touch. Since this place also has a bakery, I decided to take home some Mexican concha bread, and it was fantastic as well!
