Perfect!! Food, service, location, everything was great! I strongly recommend. Maybe the best place for dinner in Matera.

Every time that we visit the Sassi it is a magical experience. The view at night from above never gets old. And walking through at any time of the day reminds one of a time long gone. We've eaten in many restaurants in the Sassi during our many trips to Matera. There is something special about spending the evening dining in the midst of these ancient homes. Alcova takes this to the next level. Set inside of one these caves, the lighting and the simple, yet elegant decor accents the natural warmth and intimacy of the space. The restaurant is small, maybe 10 tables. The service is excellent. And then, there's the food. The ingredients are local and fresh, the combinations are innovative and invariably delicious. It reflects the efforts of a chef who is after something different, something special. I suspect that he usually succeeds. Each of our three courses, a shrimp appetizer, a seafood ravioli and a salmon fillet, were not only excellent, but the presentation was unique. The wine selection, a local chardonnay, was a nice match. There are many restaurants in Matera that offer long menus of ample, local dishes. And they are fine. This is not one of those places. If you are looking for an intimate evening that promises an interesting take on fresh ingredients, Alcova is well worth a visit.
