The outdoor seating area is great; however the service is slow and the capuns that we ordered were very ordinary. Three large but tasteless capuns for 24chf, not good.

This restaurant is in the middle of the picturesque Malans village which is worth exploring. For those skiing and with cars, it is a relatively short drive from some of the ski resorts and therefore given the quality of its food, is a useful diversion before or after reaching the ski resorts. We visited at lunchtime on a pleasant sunny day and the restaurant terrace which has two large umbrellas, affords partially restricted views of the mountains, but also of the village and surroundings. Curiously for a hotel and restaurant, the car park appears to be only paying by the hour, rather than being owned by the hotel, which is a surprising disappointment. The large property is probably more of a winter venue given its classic wooden chalet indoor restaurant style, but the patio is very beautiful and feels private given the gaps between each of the underlying tables. The menu comprises a lovely cross section of first, main and desserts with a separate tasting menu, which given the time, would be a superb way to spend an evening. We selected the Burrata, the northern shrimps, tenderloin beef and the veal as main courses. We finished with a selection from the cheeseboard. Each course was absolutely fresh, well sourced with organic and local vegetables with delicate and not too fussy sauces. In other words, a significant attention to detail without making it appear so. The plates were beautifully delivered and presented and the food served piping hot. The bread, something that normally with a 15 Gault Millau ranking would be something one would look forward to trying, was actually rather disappointing but otherwise the food at every level was superb. The lady of the house briefly said hello at the outset of the meal, and was very pleasant, but missed a good opportunity to explain a little bit about the food, cuisine, kitchen, or even the history of the property, and serving staff were quite mixed in terms of pro-activity. It feels the restaurant has not quite worked out whether it is casual dining or something slightly better but still casual. The indoor property, as we left, was a delight, beautifully renovated and refurbished, with a photograph of Prince Charles in full military regalia who had visited many years previously. The photograph perhaps is an indication of its target audience. There are many excellent high quality restaurants in the area, and although the food and the kitchen deserve to be praised and would certainly be worth a visit in isolation, for the experience that has been attempted, it did not quite have a warm welcoming feeling. Perhaps this was a first impression and this would not stop us from returning, but still a slight surprise. For anybody in the area it is absolutely worth a visit for the quality of the food, and hopefully a slightly different experience in terms of feeling welcome.
