For a tasty Ethiopian/Eritrean meal in the Porta Venezia quarter of Milan, Asmara is a pretty good bet. This friendly eatery is named after the capital city of Eritrea and has lots (but not all) of the well-known Ethiopian/Eritrean dishes. Being with my Italian friends who had never eaten Ethiopian before, it was fun showing them how to eat with their hands using the spongy Injera bread as a scoop. We all shared the Antipasto Misto appetizer with its variety of offerings including a delicious sesame puree. For my main course, I opted for the Gored Gored and was not at all disappointed. The beef and veggies were perfectly balanced and the spicy housemade Berbere sauce gave a sharp kick addition. I had no room for a dessert, just for another Ethiopian beer! The owner stopped by to chat a couple of times and we all left contented to stroll along the nearby Corso Buenos Aires!
In short: ethnic cuisine at the top and at low prices, very kind staff. All the story: I first came to the Asmara restaurant 10 years ago. It was my first ethnic restaurant and it was great for me to taste these new flavors. In the meantime years have passed, first as a student and then of life abroad. In a nutshell, I never came back. I lived near Washington DC and there I had tried several Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants: they were never like that. I thought it was the thrill of the novelty. Well, I came back today, bringing three other friends. The restaurant Asmara is as good as I remembered, with the 3 friends all very satisfied with the experience. The very kind staff makes the whole atmosphere even more familiar. If you hadn't understood, I suggest you go! In my opinion an institution in the family of restaurants in Milan.
