I have been a fan and a regular of this place for the last few years. I did post a very positive review two years ago. We went again today and we were surprised by a few changes in the menu. Notably, some of the iconic nigiris like ikura and unagui are not available anymore but replaced by cuenquitos that contain less fish, more rice and are more expensive. Vegetable tempura has also been removed in favour of more expensive options.
We went here for Sunday lunch on the basis of good reviews, when our favourite Japanese restaurants were either fully booked or closed. One attraction was that the chef has his roots in Osaka, in the Kansai region famed for its cooking. However, the first disappointment was that there was not a single Kansai dish on the menu; it was downhill from there. We had salmon sashimi which was passable but not exceptional, avocado and cheese tempura (one of the chef's specialities) which tasted greasy, grilled beef which was neither tender nor tasty, eal nigiri and prawn/vegetable tempura which were just OK, and boiled white rice with a veal topping which was awful. A daigingyo Sake was good but expensive. We felt that the only authentic aspect of our visit was the Japanese hostess who was extremely pleasant and welcoming.
Family run Japanese restaurant with authentic flavours and cooked with love and technique. A gem in Madrid.
