Ramen and very good gyozas, although I think there are fewer vegan options than before.
Great taste, many options! Had the dragon vegan ramen and not disappointed
The restaurant has quite some vegan options, both for starters and ramens, which is why I'm giving 3 stars. I really liked the gyoza, but I didn't enjoy the ramens that much. The noodles are just the precooked ones that you can make at home and even though they use heura, which is super good, the whole thing is really nothing special at all. If it wasn't for the gyoza and the choice, I would've give 2 stars... the place is nice though and the waiter was nice too.
Surprised considering other reviews, but I found Ramen Shifu to be very average (though the poor staff seemed very overworked, so I’m not going to talk about the service . Ramen broths were underwhelming and watery, veggie gyoza were standard defrosted affairs (but at least came with black vinegar instead of soy sauce , and the vegan chicken had a very rubbery texture. The ramen was filled with things that had no place in ramen (though to be fair with a name like Ramen Shifu, authenticity is clearly not the name of the game , but trying to eat a massive slab of soft pak choi with chopsticks is an endeavour. The menu describes most noodles as “udon” which these noodles absolutely are not. While udon can vary in shape and thickness, the noodles Ramen Shifu use are spaghetti-like in their thickness. They’re just regular noodles and I have no idea what possessed them to use the word “udon” anywhere. Edamame were so overcooked that they were soft and squishy, and the waiter took them away before they were half-finished. Toilet is down a spectacularly dangerous staircase, so avoid if you have a disability this would be a problem with (including visual — there’s an exciting moment at the top where you might be taking one or two stairs at a time depending on where you step, and the warning tape is not sufficient warning . All in all I think, ironically, that the variety on offer is the downfall here. Rather than specialising in a handful of dishes and doing them well (or even fast, the two staples of any ramen place in Japan , Ramen Shifu is trying to do too much (complete with random bao and dim sum on the menu, so at least we know why it’s called Ramen Shifu and not Ramen Sensei, I guess? and as a consequence is not very good at any of it. As a final word, the literal chunks of red chilli in my ramen would make any ramen chef screech in horror. Thin slices, folks. They’re supposed to be thin slices. 2/5, cannot recommend, but if you’re forced to go there at least the food is edible. Updated from previous review on 2021-10-05
