What Nick Charlton doesn't like about The Taj Mahal:
Deeply unpleasant, dirty place staffed by a very weird individual who truly does not belong in the hospitality industry. I have given it as many stars as appear on its hygiene rating sticker on the door. You may wish to consider elsewhere unfortunately. View all feedback.
I would love to be able to rate this restaurant but as it was closed when it was supposed to be open I can't. Web page and sign on door both said open at 5pm but at 6pm it was still shut.
If you find yourself in Machynlleth on a Saturday night and the first pub you go to isn't serving food, and the second pub you go to is fully booked, then DON'T make a decision to go to the Taj Mahal. service was friendly but quite useless (forgetting things), food was poor. Meat was extremely chewy and the sauces weren't particularly tasty. Nan bread was ok restaurant itself was particularly dirty. Carpets were filthy and the windowsill in the toilets was covered in dead flies. Most random Indian restaurants in the UK are of a decent quality but this place has slipped through the net. Avoid unless you are a fan of Delhi Belly.
The main food was ok, the pershwer nans were very good. The carpet was black not red as it was meant to be, the mens toilets had mold on the ceiling and large numbers of dead flys. The service was ok until it came time to pay for the meal. They only accept cash which we were aware of by the sign as we arrived and all walked off to get cash. We finished the meal and then due to us all needing receipts to claim expenses, we asked for individual payment and receipts. This seemed an impossible mission for the staff and they got very rude and agressive saying we had to all pay as one and stop making things difficult. after stating our case they reluctantly did give us recipts but they were not itemised and half were incorrect. We had had enough by this point and decided not to argue further and left without a tip.Overall i would not recommend this establishment.
Delicious food. Loved the naga chilli. Good service.
The food was absolutely delightful. I ordered a simple Korma, and it exceeded my expectations with generous, well-cooked chunks of chicken and plenty of flavorful sauce. The rice was perfectly prepared and wholesome. Overall, the food was excellent and reasonably priced. If I had to mention one small downside, it would be that the lighting in the restaurant is a bit dim, reminiscent of what you might find in public restrooms to deter drug use—not exactly the same, but it did create a somewhat subdued atmosphere. However, the restaurant had a pleasant ambiance with its spacious and clean setting, complemented by large, attractive photos on the walls. The server was friendly and genuinely interested in our experience. I will definitely return.
