After ordering a cappuccino and some biscotti, a sample of the panforte was added. To my surprise I was taken back to my childhood, as this was the desert my great grandmother made, and the memories of her flooded in. I had tried to find these flavors for years and there it was delivered to the bistro table in the lovely square where time stood still. The ladies there are lovely and the buccellato bread also delicious. We went everyday while were in Lucca to enjoy what became our ritual.

It would be a sin not to drop into this patisserie if you are in Lucca. Initially I was trying to research for the best place in Lucca to try the local specialty, Buccellato. After doing a bit of research, the reviews seem to point to this patisserie as having the best and most authentic Buccellato. After my visit to the church in front of the patisserie, I dropped in to buy a few things for lunch and to take back to Florence. They sell the Buccellato in either a whole loaf or in portions. Each portion has three small slices as a minimum. There can be quite a bit of confusion as to what a portion is. The Americans behind me had the same confusion. I said I wanted two portions (I thought this meant two slices), and they were about to give me six slices (one portion being three slices). I had to quickly stop the lady and clarify. She had sliced up the other portion but didn 't have an issue with me taking only one portion. My feedback is that they should make a sign up in English to make it clear what a portion is, as this is incredibly confusing and they get a lot of tourists I can imagine, trying to taste this local bread. In any case, I also saw a loaf of Chocolate twist bread (containing chocolate chips in a sweet bread) and a small apple turnover. The Buccellato was OK but I think that 's just how it tastes and it 's nothing special. What was delicious was the apple turnover. I have tried so many and I have never had such a crispy, flaky, fresh, delicate apple turnover in most of delectable pastry. The Chocolate twist was also incredibly delicious. I wish they sold this in single portions rather than a loaf. For lunch I had those three small slices of Buccellato, the small apple turnover and half of the loaf Chocolate twist. It was a sweet lunch but delicious!! You must visit this place if you go to Lucca! I checked out a few other patisseries including Patisserie Dianda which is also highly rated, but this place looked much better! If you want to try Buccellato, I would still go to this place and you can pick a few other safe options in case you don 't care for Buccellato after trying it.

We went there to try Lucca's famous and traditional buccellato at what is said to be its most historical outlet. At 2.50 euro for three slices from a small loaf, it is not cheap. The buccallato is a sort of chewy raisin bread. It is pleasant enough, but nothing to rave about. Having tried it, we can now cross it off our to-do list!

Price is in line with the products. Rating: DISTINGUISHED WISH: Sunday's Buccellato should be as big as the weekly one (not to mention the weight). Well done!

Buccellato Taddeucci in Lucca is a beautiful, small café, very stylishly decorated and located right in the historic city center. The prices are fair, which makes enjoying the delicious specialties even more pleasant. During our visit, the cathedral was being renovated, which made the stay a bit noisier – however, this was no criticism of the café itself, just bad timing. I felt very comfortable, and when I am next in Lucca, I will definitely stop by again.
