Just don’t get why everyone raves about this place. It is expensive compared to other restaurants in Lucca for what you get. Not once we were explained too that it was a Tapas type restaurant, the waitress’s comment was “is that all you having” when my main was 14€. I wasn’t give a plate to eat my food from and it just came in a bowl.
Everything on this menu is fantastic. After living in Italy over a year, I was so happy to find this place. I’ve eaten here numerous times. Variety!!! Changing menu. International cuisine, great staff, nice location and interior is nice, too. Best bread in Lucca. Make a reservation, often full. Seating begins at 7:30 pm. Open for some lunch some days.
A real disappointment as we wanted so much to like this place. Recommended it by an Airbnb host it looked quirky and different from the usual Italian fare so we booked. The waitress was excellent, cannot praise her enough, but the food was at best weird and at times just bad. They recommend 4 of their small plates between 2 so (with our waitress guiding us) ordered Thai Fried Chicken, anchovies with figs and burrata (I think), bao bun with fried squid and…a toasted sandwich. For dinner?!! The sandwich was actually delicious, but definitely a lunch food, not as part of a dinner that much was just weird. The anchovies dish was as strange as it sounds and not really a success. The bao bun filling lacked flavour but the Thai chicken was the real low point in NO WAY Thai in flavour, not even close. Far too thick coating of whatever the batter stuff was and rock hard. Deeply unpleasant. This place could be great but needs to work out what it is. They also need to focus more on the details like the bathroom which had bins overflowing with tissue, no toilet roll and generally just a bit of a state. Their sourdough bread though…now that was good!
We ate at Gigliola three times during our visit to Lucca. Simply put, we had some of the best food we have ever eaten! Seriously! Thai fried chicken, Arepas, and Beef Tartare it’s one of the best fusion restaurants around. Sandwiches were available, too. Amazing.
