I had Pigs’ cheeks which was pretty tasty, if not quite h... read more We went this weekend to what WAS our favourite restaurant in Loule. On Friday night the meals were ok. I had Pigs’ cheeks which was pretty tasty, if not quite hot enough. My husband had pork in a creamy mushroom sauce and he enjoyed it. So much so that we returned on Saturday. My husband ordered the same and I asked for grilled cod. We waited for ages. We do not drink quickly but our bottle of wine was almost finished by the time our food arrived. Before this however, a group of around 8 locals arrived, along with a small child. Everything stopped immediately, while the kitchen staff, the waiting staff and the Manager (owner? all had a go at holding the baby, walking around with it as though none of the other customers were there. Our food arrived in due course. The other party’s meals arrived about 3 minutes later and were noticeably piled up on their plates. Now to our food: Mine was barely warm. It was a piece of fairly small, raggedy cod, complete with grey, jelly-like skin. On the plate also was a couple of boiled potatoes, carrots and runner beans. I called the very pleasant lady who had taken our order over and told her it wasn’t hot. She took it away (left my husband eating his meal which clearly isn’t right but we were starving by now! and brought it back. The fish was hotter but the rest of it just as lukewarm. I caught the Manager/Owner’s eye and told him the rest of it wasn’t hot. He got some tongs, took the vegetables off my plate with them and went off with them (leaving my fish getting cold again! Eventually he brought them back, pushed them from his plate onto mine, said sorry and walked away. Did we finish our meals? Yes, mostly. Was there any attempt of an apology? Absolutely not. Yes we were charged the full amount (the fish at €11 was almost the most expensive dish on the menu and yes we paid. The biggest questions are would we recommend Calypso? No way. Would we go back? Never. Someone mentioned it had changed hands since we went there last. That is very obvious. Interesting there’s not been any great reviews since last year? I don’t think so. It’s very clear why. Avoid. A waste of money as well as a precious night of our weekend away.

I had the steak (medium) in green peppercorn sauce, my husband had lamb chops (6). Both served with chips and salad although we requested boiled potatoes. Both dishes were very well cooked and nicely presented. Plenty of pepper sauce with the steak. Really enjoyed it. No room for pud, just a coffee. With a bottle of house red, small water and a bottle of beer the bill came to around 42 euros. The service was excellent and the food arrived quicker than expected. Would recommend it and will be going back.
