La Closerie des Roses is a pretty restaurant on the Loire River. The menu has 3-4 selections for starters, mains (focusing on fish, but there were other selections) and desserts; my husband and I both enjoyed our fish mains and my dessert souffle was outstanding. We ate dinner inside the restaurant by the large windows (with views of the Loire, fishing boats, abbey), and afterwards sat on the terrace under a huge lin... View all feedback.
What Leif Wuckert doesn't like about La Closerie des Roses:
We had a stopover at a chambres d'hotes in Varades on our way home after a holiday on the Ile de Re. I contacted the host there a few days in advance and he recommended the Closerie as it was close by. It was excellent and turned out to be a highlight of our holiday. Each dish was beautifully and lovingly prepared and presented, and extremely tasty, with a gorgeous blend of flavours. We were disappointed to be the only diners apart from another couple who arrived a good hour or so after us, on a Friday evening. The waiter had a young lad with him doing work experience and they engaged us in a little bit of chat that was not intrusive and helped to fill the room a little. The setting, right beside the Loire and with roses in the garden, is wonderful. As we were preparing to go the chef came out to shake hands with us, which was a nice touch.
The crayfish salad is melty, the croustillant of cod deliciously buttery, the choice of Anjou wines very varied and tasty and the service utterly welcoming and efficient . Why are so many talented chefs so unable to match their interior design with their gastronomic taste. The room is as pallid and bright as a hospital reception. The 5th star is only missing because of the decor while the location is stunning with a spectacular view on the church of St Florent le Vieil and the serene Loire of all times France.
