Last Saturday we walked in at 6.20; have you booked? , was the opening gambit from a waiter who seemed stressed and uninterested. No , was our reply and we were shown to a table and given menus. There were two waiters on duty and six tables occupied, mostly couples and one party of 7. After twenty minutes three more tables had been occupied, some having had orders taken we remained ignored, no drinks, no order taken. With the an hour left, and the theatre beckoning, we decided to leave and cut our losses. The manager oozing smoothness appeared and apologised: can I buy you a glass of wine, please stay, we will get you fed in time . We relented, sat down, ordered......... and waited the offer of the wine was not repeated. First came the wine a not inexpensive bottle of Gavi: it was very warm, and the mineral water was forgotten. When I mentioned this the same reluctant waiter plonked it in the the ice bucket and disappeared. The starters came and, because the wine was nowhere near cold enough, I complained to the same manager, asking for two glasses of house white as an interim solution. Then came the bill and here 's the thing folks, beware this smooth manager with all the words yet no sincerity: they charged me for the two glasses of wine which had been offered free and stuck 10% service charge on the bill. When I challenged this, he reverted to slippery technique, deducted them from the bill and told us that we had had a good evening. He knew exactly what he was doing.
