We went there late on a Saturday afternoon, without having a booking and we discovered the meaning of good service . The staff were professional and really kind, never said no to anything and made every single effort to make us feel confortable, which they completely succeeded in. In addition, the food (local cuisine) was of an excellent quality, and the prices were more than reasonable. All in all, I will visit them again soon and, of course, I recommend Antic Can Marcel·lí to anyone visiting Llívia.

It was a chilly Thursday night in Llivia, Spain. We we road weary and wandering through the streets looking for a warm (and open) restaurant to have our well deserved dinner. The owner of the Antic Can Marcelli took pity on us and invited us in, even though it was not quite 8 p.m. She gave us a seat at the bar, served us 2 cold beers and continued her hectic opening chores. When the restaurant actually was open she showed us to a table by the window and thus began one of the more interesting restaurant experiences we have ever had while traveling. We don 't speak Catalan, we have a smattering of Spanish, and some fairly decent French. Our savior spoke Catalan, some Spanish, and a smattering of English. The menu is written in Catalan. The restaurant is Catalonian cuisine. We had absolutely no idea what Catalonian cuisine was like. We had a lively 15 minutes or so of attempting to communicate she trying to explain the menu, we trying to understand. Finally with the help of an Apple Translation App. on our smart phone we were able to successfully place our orders. She was lovely and patient throughout the entire process. Another couple came in right after us. They spoke some Spanish, no English or French and she started the whole procedure all over again with them. I was able to help her a bit with some Italian to describe the cheesecake desert. (They did not understand cheesecake , they did understand panne cotta We were served delicious, hearty Catalan dishes. These included a fresh squash soup (telling her that in English it was butternut and zucchini), assorted croquettes, grilled pork and rabbit and that delicious cheese cake desert. We were the first folks in that evening and we were the last to leave. Her husband turned out to be the chef and he came out to meet us. We were offered a taste of their local aperitif (thank goodness we were walking back to our hotel). My one regret is that we were too tired to stay any longer as I know that it would have just continued what was an extremely pleasant evening. I wish that I knew how to say Thank you very much in Catalan.

A restaurant is always more than just a meal. This family-run house epitomizes the magical combination fine food with friendly service. We dined here twice during our stay in Llivia, and we're pleased with our decision each time. Are there risottos were rich, carnes tender and authentic, vegetables fresh. In particular, the chef's forays into haute cuisine, such as the creme de pumpkin amuse-bouche we had one night, combined creativity, flavor, and authenticity.
