Visited cafe yesterday. We had the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels. The bagel was a bit soft. Tea was OK . Very busy I assume because of the tiny cafe at the new M and S in Liverpool 1. Staff friendly as always. Only criticism is that they have the sandwiches at a separate kiosk to the cakes. The hot food is at a third kiosk. View all feedback.
What Alexander Marks doesn't like about The Place To Eat:
For such a lovely store it is a shame the cafe is a let down. Surly unhelpful staff and poor coffee it needs modernising, less canteen like and brought into line with the ethos of the store. View all feedback.
I had higher expectations from John Lewis. I met some friends for lunch today and ordered the tomato soup with basil. The soup was thin and lukewarm, and the bread was rock hard. I ended up exchanging my piece of bread for another equally hard one. The meal was expensive and the overall quality was very poor. We will need to find a new restaurant for our next outing.
My visit to The Place To Eat in John Lewis today was surprisingly good. They serve cream tea, consisting of a scone with clotted cream and jam, as well as a hot drink of your choice for £4.95, which I don't think is bad value. I opted for a plain scone with just butter because I'm not a big fan of creamy gloop on my scones. For that, they only charged me £4.65. The service was also reasonably good the staff were friendly enough and got through the short queue relatively quickly. The only thing I would note is that the hot food served is extortionately priced. The menu outside looks more like a lawyer's bank statement, as everything is £9 £10, which is a rip off! I can't comment on the quality of food, but I would note it is served canteen style. I'm not sure food prepared like school dinners warrants such prices, but whatever. Also, the café is a bit dated in respect of décor. It was clean and comfortable granted, but I'm surprised the 1990s haven't called John Lewis asking for their tables back! They need to throw some of them on the council tip and get some new ones in! Having said that, let's be honest the salient point of this review is that I enjoyed a reasonably priced scone and a pot of tea today in John Lewis' café. If you too would like a scone, you know the place to eat it is The Place to Eat!
This has been bugging me for a while now so I've had to post this on here to warn potential visitors! The hot food counter seems to inexplicably close up at 2:30 in the afternoon even though there is still a large demand for hot food and the staff actively have to turn away customers, which baffles me. Do John Lewis not like money? Shoppers do not want the stale sandwiches and rock hard cakes, they want a proper meal for their lunch. I've since resorted to visiting M&S cafe instead as they serve hot food until 5pm and quite honestly their cutlery is spotless compared to John Lewis. Really poor service from such a large, well known chain.
Just decided to have lunch in john lewis, expecting to get a bit of quality. Substandard choice, pitiful salad, coffee awful.Like some greasy spoon cafe. So sad how the mighty have fallen. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Visited at 2.30 on a Sunday afternoon. Not overly busy but after standing in the cold queue for 10 minutes with very little movement decided to switch my allegiance to the hot queue. Was surprised not to pick my food as I went past but...
