India Gate is my favorite Indian restaurant in Lisbon. My partner and I have ordered takeout from there probably 10 times in the past year or so. Today, I brought a couple of friends to the restaurant for my first dine-in experience. The decor is quite nice, although having the television on with depressing news in the background is a downer while dining out. The food served was as delicious as ever. We ordered some of my favorite dishes: Chilli Chicken, Saag Paneer, Lamb Curry, Samosas, and Butter Naan. The surprise came when we received the bill. There was a fee for condiments that I had never been charge for before. Thinking this was an error, I asked the manager/owner about it. He said that the fee was added to help offset the $2.50/per person charge that The Fork charges him for the reservation. On principle, my friends and I found this tactic to be appalling and reprehensible. He suggested that I call directly for reservations next time. Unfortunately, for the three of us, there may not be a next time.
We absolutely recommend eating at India Gate! The food was really amazing, a really good choice for those looking for something different than traditional Portuguese cuisine. If we stayed longer, we would definitely be back!
This small restaurant is located in the Alfama district of Lisbon and worth a visit. Political and courteous service - a taste of India instead of a diluted version.
