No rude owner here, just very friendly staff!! Hidden in the main street of Belem is this little gem...its a small cafe that was full of locals grabbing an espresso and their homemade beer cake, which for us is always a good sign. No menus with pictures and pushy waiters! Beer cake was just as good as the infamous pasteis without the lengthy queues and price tag. Beer was local and very cold and the chicken pies were tasty. A grab and go type lunch which was what we wanted.

We sat down for a moment without ordering and the little old man came outside and started yelling at us. Go down the street to the famous location and avoid the angry old man behind the counter at this one.

This is a alternative to try it's famous beer cake if it's more famous neighbour is too busy. The place is small but I do like the beer cake which bears to comparison to de nata

Less known location for awesome authentic food in Belem district. If you are really hungry, don't want to wait in mile long queues for pasteis de belem or just don't like sweets and want an authentic food THIS is The Place! It's just a 5 minute walk from famous Jerónimos Monastery. We had awesome Francesinhas deliciously refreshing sangria there. If you don't know what Francesinha is it is one of Portugal's national dishes, a huge sandwich with all sorts of meats, melted cheese, french fries, beer tomato sauce and even an egg on top of this pile of food. It's hot, it's delicious and it will give you energy for lots of sightseeing. As for sangria they are making it from homemade wine. It's a bit fizzy, not overly sweet, ice cold and absolute delish! And all of this for really great prices we've paid around 5 Euros per sandwich. A real bargain! Skip the popular places for this hidden gem it's worth it!
