Because my husband really wanted to try guinea pig (cuy) while we were in Lima, we made a pilgrimage to Tarwi in Jesús Maria. He was not disappointed. He ordered the half guinea pig plate, and it was a generous portion for one, nicely garnished with tasty potatoes in rocoto sauce and a coarse cooked grain (nicer than it sounds). Neither of us had eaten guinea pig before, so we don’t have a direct comparison. But, it was delicious and simply and expertly prepared: fried to perfection — moist but fully cooked on the inside and crispy on the outside. The service was very good; the staff were experienced and friendly and patient with our poor Spanish. There is another El Tarwi restaurant located in La Victoria
Local ventilado y el personal con una atención agradables. Pedimos trucha, cuy y por supuesto Pachamanca con un peculiar presentación: toda las carnes estaban empaquetado, logrando preservar el sabor y la temperatura. Muy recomendable.
Lima is very different from the highlands, therefore it is REALLY hard to find a restaurant that serves a good guiney pig dish. Depending on what part of Peru you are, guiney pig can be cooked differen (i do not recommend trying it in Cusco). I have eaten it plenty of times and highly recommend to try the guiney pig dish from Ancash. So far the only place in Lima that i can find a good guiney pig from Ancash is El Tarwi. I encourage trying guiney pig, the meat is lean and healthy and it is served with a bed of potatoes marinated in a red delicious sauce.
In Peru each region has its own cuisine and this restaurant is dedicated to serve different dishes that are typical to the Callejón de Huaylas and other Peruvian staple dishes. It is located between buildings in a street with no outlet. The place is very casual and clean. Here you will find the appetizer known as Chocho, a kind of bean that is prepared as a salad also known as Andean Ceviche, excellent option for vegans and vegetarians. This is a place where you can also try the famous Picante de Cuy, which is a pan fried guinea pig served with potatoes; if you are not that adventurous, there are several options in the menu that are not that exotic.
