It was one of the few sushi restaurants that was open during this time and the reviews for it were pretty good. Sakura is a small family run restaurant that serves Japanese Sushi dishes. The restaurant decor has that modern sparse Japanese feel but comes across as a little lackluster. This is not a busy restaurant – during our dinner there were only 3 other people who came in to dine! And it was very chilly, despite the fact that we were sitting beside an electric heater! We ordered a combination of sushi and selection of grilled skewers of chicken and beef. All the usual suspects are on the menu, including sushi, sashimi, maki and nigiri selections (tuna, salmon, shrimp, white fish, etc. We found some of the portions to be on the small side, perhaps in an effort to require the diner to order additional portions? Sakura is not cheap, so watch what you order as it can become an expensive meal otherwise! We found the taste of both the fish and the meat to be so-so, not full of flavor, just adequate. Disappointing really as we’d so been looking forward to a Sushi treat! Sushi is a fine and delicate food, this seems to have been missing at Sakura. Neither myself or my partner left the restaurant with that feeling of satisfaction one enjoys after a good meal. It was simply a case of “we are done now”, and we paid and left. While the service was really friendly I wouldn’t recommend this to any person who knows their sushi or are Sushi aficionado. It’s an okay restaurant for quick bite but there are better locations in Lille to spend your money.
