Drove one hour to Epeleta full of anticipation, after hearing very good things about their grilled beef (chuleta) . Location and dining room are as beautiful as they get and service, while correct, a touch too informal for my taste. Owner came to say hello to 2 tables of regulars. I was sitting alone at the third table and it would 've been a nice touch to come say a few words as well, but she didn 't (I 'm Spanish, no language barrier). Started off with some stewed wild mushrooms (in season) that were (over) cooked and had too much onion for my taste. They should have tried much harder at 20 euros per serving. Beef was good, expertly grilled in their wood fire, served at the right temperature. While soft and high quality, could have been juicier (the cut was too lean, a bit more fat left with the meat would 've improved things). Steak was overall lacking in flavor for my taste, probably the result of a short dry-aging. All in all good enough . For the price paid (110 EUR, no dessert, 2 bottles of sparkling water) , 3.5 stars would be a more balanced grade here. Wouldn 't go back.
Had a variety of starters, chistorra and mixed vegetables stood out. Main dish a chuleton just from heaven. Buttery meat with a taste of nuts, smooth to cut yet tasty and crunchy, grilled perfectly. Very decen red wine, a great efficient service and we went with sven kids. Not cheap but worth every euro. One of the best txuletas in a long time, and this region offers great food. Fell in love with the place and only regret having been here 8 years and not found out earlier. To be repeated! And dessert, leche frita, go check it out!
After finding Epeleta thanks to Tripadvisor my brother in law and I had a spectacular lunch. We could have finished off the 3.5 kg Chuleton. The staff were like you were amongst family. 10/10
Three years ago we ate dinner here and I was blown away by,the quality of the meet. This trip to Spain we made a special detour to eat again at Epeleta. Now they are only open for Lunch. This is not for the vegetarians but, oh my, what a piece of meat. It comes from old cows, has yellow fat and a deep Color and flavour. Still probably the best steak I have eaten. Anywhere. Looking forward to the next trip to Epeleta. And, no, it is not cheap, but I have no complaints.
We stopped at this place for lunch since there were not many other places around. It was a very expensive meal and the food portions were not very big. A simple salad is 14euros and after another small plate and 2 soups our bill was 55euros. This place is ridiculously overpriced. A bottle of beer is 4euros when most places charge 1,50. I would never recommend this place, it looks nice but its not worth it.
