What omundson dislikes about Red Onion:
I’ve tried both of the 10-layer cakes and I recommend skipping the chocolate in favor of the red velvet. I've ordered it to go twice now. The chili dog and slaw dog are tasty; personally, I prefer my chili dog without beans, but it was still flavorful. The chicken fried steak is quite filling and may make you reconsider dessert—so definitely get it to go, but don’t miss out on it! View all feedback.
While traveling for work, my brother and me stopped in around midnight. He got the Breakfast country fried steak. $16 for the large size. Was quite large, about 9inches across. He said it was good, exactly what you would expect of a country fried steak, but that he has had better for less money. I got the southern fried chicken with onion rings. The chicken was superb ????. Theygive the choice between dark and white meat. I got 3 pieces dark meat, 1 white. The darker meat choice was better for me. Gooduse of pepper and salt, just enough of both for excellent flavor. The onion ring had the perfect amount of crunch, while notoverlooking the onion. Great flavor, 10/10 meal. Both me and my brother got sweet tea, but it tasted like it had been steepedto long and oversweetened to compensate. 4/10 Decent size sized crowd inside sharing stories enjoying themselves but not rowdy.Very warm and friendly atmosphere. Decently sized Diner, 4-6 booths, 4 or so big 6-8 seat tables. Waitstaff was very friendlyand helpful, despite it being so late at night. Open 24/7, excellent place to eat in the early/late hours of the day.Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert available; didn't seem to be a set time of day for ordering any of of them. Prices canvary; price range anywhere between $5-$30, the more expensive options being things like their 1Lb Ribeye steak at$28. TL;DR Excellent fried chicken, good country fried steak, sweet tea was steeped too long; sugar added to save it. 8/10
Awesome people extra friendly. The food was homemade, wonderful. A nice sit down meal.
November 2022: I discovered this restaurant called Red Onion through Maps and decided to try it out based on its reviews. However, it didn't quite meet the expectations set by the five-star ratings I had seen. Considering that it's a truck stop eatery rather than a Michelin-starred establishment, I'll take that into account in my review. We travel through this part of I-10 a few times a year, so I might give this restaurant another chance in the future. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: - The food is straightforward. - Generous portion sizes. - Decent desserts. - The pork chops were satisfactory. - The chicken strip dinner for kids was excellent. - One of the waitresses was outstanding and picked up the slack from our original server. Cons: - My salad plate was forgotten, preventing me from sampling the salad bar. In hindsight, it might have been a blessing, as I wasn't impressed with what I saw at the salad bar. - The items at the salad bar were unlabeled, and I witnessed a mischievous child putting ranch dressing into the cucumber container. - The restaurant was not clean. - We were seated at a dirty table that had not been cleared after previous guests left. - Our dine-in order was left sitting under heat lamps for about 5-6 minutes before being served. I almost got up to retrieve it myself, and I probably should have. - The turnip greens had an unusual cinnamon flavor that I found unappealing.
The food was exquisite, the portion sizes were just right, and the service was quick and welcoming.
