We are locals who have frequented Jean Lafitte our entire lives. In fact, after Hurricane Katrina, we decided to visit regularly instead of moving here, often chartering guides when we could afford to. We have made several friends in the area and have shared positive reviews for many establishments. However, I cannot overlook this incident. I was told by someone at the harbor that reporting this to the mayor's office would be futile. That alone indicates there is a serious problem. So, you may be wondering what happened, so here's the short version: We wanted boiled crawfish and heard great things about this restaurant, despite its appearance. It was described as a longstanding family business, which resonated with us. When my daughter, Monica, called, the woman on the phone confirmed they had crawfish, gave her a price, and informed her that they only accepted cash. Monica agreed to order 10 pounds, got the directions, and prepared the cash. She loaded up all the kids and babies in the van, excited to share this meal with our family. Upon arrival, Monica found the restaurant looking quite shabby, but we encouraged our children to embrace experiences and use their best judgment. When she walked inside, however, she was met with rudeness that made her uncomfortable. An older white woman looked her up and down, coldly stating, "We're almost closed." When Monica reminded her that she had placed an order just 15 minutes prior, the woman reacted with clear disdain, saying, "Oh, you're Monica? Well, I already sold the crawfish." Monica was taken aback, upset by the encounter. She thanked the woman and left without further comment. Feeling frustrated, Monica called me, and I immediately rang the restaurant to place an order for 10 pounds of crawfish, claiming I could be there in ten minutes. Acting as a local, I was met with a friendly response: “Oh, yeah, come now; I just had an order cancel.” I was enraged. As a business owner, it is within their rights to refuse service, but this blatant racism speaks volumes about a town that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. My heart aches for my daughter, who is gentle and has a heart as expansive as the universe. This kind of racial injustice is exactly why we protest and advocate for change. When will this cruelty come to an end? When will our children and their children be judged for who they are, rather than the color of their skin? As for the quality of food at this location, I cannot comment on that and likely never will. I encourage people of color to take their business elsewhere. Just a few miles down the road, without any prior reservation, Monica walked into Boutte Restaurant and had an entirely different experience. The crawfish and potatoes were EXCELLENT, and the customer service was even BETTER!
