We've learned that while on foreign travel large department stores have good restaurants that are reasonably priced and people with locals who know a good deal. For two nights we ate early evening meals at the Galeria Kaufhof in the center of Cologne's old town. It is a cafeteria style restaurant were you can get hot food from a chef or hot food from the buffet. If your meal gets cold from the buffet, they have micro... View all feedback.
Question: Can a department store restaurant be pleasant, and serve fresh and hearty fare? If you are in Cologne (Köln ,and you are planing to visit the Dinea self-service restaurant, located at the 3rd floor of the Galeria Kaufhof department store, the answer is yes .The restaurant is very large, but because the individual dining areas are separated by dividers, when you enter (2 entrances ! it does not feel like you step into a university cafeteria. My wife and I like the Dinea layout better than the LeBuffet layout, located at the top floor of the Karstadt department store,a 15 min. walk away, because Dinea has several individual hot food-,salad-,drink- and dessert stations. While the LeBuffet has mostly one large, round station, that at busy times can lead to over-crowding.The main hot table at Dinea offers daily specials. With the usual meat/fish dishes come 2 sides.Signs hanging from the ceiling explain, what will end up on your plate. But the people manning the hot table are flexible, when it comes to mix match the sides. This being Cologne, people just love home-fries.Other stations offer a generous selection of salads (you pay by weight ,pastas and casseroles.Plenty of juices and beers to choose from. And for a department store restaurant, the Dinea has an amazing selection of cakes tortes.Coffee is excellent too.You can pay cash or by credit card, even AMEX and VISA are being accepted.People, who do not want a full meal, can buy a single item, like a bratwurst or a Frikadelle (Hamburger and a bun,and then head for the beer bar, next to the entrance, and order themselves a Kölsch (the local brew ,or two.
I took a afternoon break here from shopping. This is a lovely Cafe and restaurant. I ordered my cake at the counter and a waitress brought it to me. The cake was suberb and coffee tasted wonderful.
Stopped here whilst shopping at Kaufhof. Self-service restaurant is on the third floor. Very clean, enough seats and tables. After 4pm menues are lower priced. Also nice cake assortment.
The Hot Chocolate drink is superb. Then the lunch is self service with salad and normal meals available. This means that you only help yourself to the amount that you need. An excellent selection and well worth a visit.
We took the buffet at a price per 100g food is ok , some stuff was really spicy very the weight because otherwise you will be surprised at the cashier
