Excellent and authentic German food! Absolutely delicious! The Cordon Bleu reminded so much of the time I was in Germany! The owner and the staff are on earth and the ambience cannot be better! View all feedback.
Second time here, but my opinion has not changed....this place is a little hard to find small parking and a few small steps to get to the door. Small seating area with top curtains and German motifs with a German travel film that plays on a small wall television. The menu is mainly carving (pork or new chicken) and bratwursts. Pages are potato salad, fried potatoes, late zle (small dumplings), red cabbage, sour wort, green salad. Schnitzels are huge and crisp, depending on which type of carving you can have with mushrooms or peppers or onions. Brats are tiny and tasteful. All ducks come with two sides. Bread is served as a free appetizer and the basket contains potato rolls and rye bread. The food is good, not great....my partner and I had a carving plate and a sausage plate on this occasion and we both noticed that the spices were very subdued. Late lice needed salt badly. Blue cabbage really needed more vinegar to beat it. We tried a slice of lemon cake and it was heavenly, light and airy, without being too sweet. Other desserts are strudel (they had expired this night), mousse, chocolate cake and carrot cake. Prices are very reasonable and service is friendly altho a little slow, but this is a small business. The cook, Mr. Horst, visits tables and chats when he can. For two plates, a dessert, a soft drink and a beer we paid $41.20 including tip.
This place has the best German food this side of New Braunfels. I had the gypsy schnitzel, and it was delicious. The pork was seasoned masterfully, but not too strong as to overpower the meat. The breading was absolutely perfect; thick enough to give a good flavor and texture without being too doughy, and with with just the perfect amount of crisp completely covering the schnitzel. The whole thing was the size of the dinner plate, and smothered in home made gravy which so far is the best I've ever had. I also recommend the warm German potato salad, which is leaps and bounds better than anything else I've had from a restaurant; the only other coming close being the warm potato salad my German nanny made. The only drawback that I could possibly list is that due to their amazing food, they get a bit busy during lunch on Friday. Although well worth the wait, expect to spend about an hour and a half from when you sit down to when you finally leave. Of course, this is partially due to the food being so good and with such large portions. I would definitely recommend going out of your way to enjoy a meal here, but make sure you have plenty of time allotted.
Having lived 3 years in Germany, I thought I'd try this restaurant to see if it could satisfy my craving for schnitzel. It did. Perhaps not the best schnitzel I have ever had but it was still very good. I had the jager schnitzel and it was huge. You won't go home hungry. The potato soup was awesome. The Spaetzle lacked flavor. Next time I will order the fried potatoes. Service was friendly and the owner/chef even came out of the kitchen to ask us how the food was. Hours are limited (as of this review, lunch is only served on Fridays) so check to make sure they are open. Good food at a good price. Give it a try.
Snitchel awsomeness... little homespun place in a house. Wait staff was frazzled but the amazing. Don't come I'd you don't like pork and potatoes.
Absolutely the best traditional German restaurant we've found in San Antonio! It is smallish, and limited hours, but worth it! The portions are huge, with sharing allowed. Great beer selection, friendly waitstaff. Love family-owned places, and this is a hidden gem!
