What Wayne Lang doesn't like about Bintang Kitchen:
Cheltenham is in need of a quick and simple Asian dining option, but unfortunately Bintang Kitchen failed to deliver. While the prices were reasonable, the quality of the ingredients, especially the meat, seemed lacking. The service was friendly and the food arrived promptly and hot, but the overall taste left much to be desired. Casual dinner here with friends who have been a few times. Great value, very pleasant and prompt service, loved the Indonesian food. Will definitely go back.
We really enjoyed our meal and will be back with friends very soon. The cafe has only been open three months. There is a very good range of dishes from across South East Asia, including a whole section of Indonesian food. My husband loved the Char Hor Fan. I had Nasi Lemak with tender curry chicken in a tasty sauce. The bill was $40 for two entrees, two mains, one dessert and $5 corkage on the BYO wine. That's good value. Most main dishes cost $10. Seafood dishes are $11 or $12. I've attached photos of the menu with prices. The little cafe is close to the level crossing at Cheltenham Station. There are only seven tables. They offer lunch and dinner and take away. Like many cafes in South East Asia, there is a large TV on one wall, tuned to a commercial station - but not intrusive. The decor is attractive and understated. We were served by a very nice lady who originally came from Jogjakarta.
Cheltenham is in need of a simple, fast food, eat-in or take-out Asian restaurant. Unfortunately, Bintang Kitchen has missed the opportunity. While the prices are reasonable, I think they achieve this by using lower quality ingredients, particularly with regard to the meat. The service was friendly, the meal delivered promptly and hot, but once tried the disappointment set in. I will be willing to give this another try, maybe it was an off night, but only one more, another failure, and I wont be back.

I've been going to L'insolite for years with my wife (winter and summer), always bypassing the big touristy terrasse restaurants for this little one tucked
