I've been coming here for several years because of the undeniable quality of every item. It's a neighborhood gem! I love getting the chicken sandwich, the pretzel croissant sandwich and basically all the pastries! Also need to mention the great service! View all feedback.
What Jason P doesn't like about Rockenwagner Bakery:
Bad use of space. This location isn’t suitable for the scale of this bakery anymore. There was a time when the neighborhood was a bit industrial but that’s no longer the case anymore. This business sort of made sense when the neighborhood wasn’t in transition, but now that it's becoming more of a destination, Rockenwagener is out of place. The major issue is every morning Rockenwagener has loading buses that block the b... Coffee and pastries are good but they're slow and sloppy. This is how my coffee was handed to me. And this was after seeing it sitting there in the counter next to the espresso machine for a full two minutes while the barista made other drinks. The person at the register had stepped away to bus a table, even though there were people waiting in line to order. I worked in restaurants and cafés for a very long time and I get that places are short staffed right now, but this was just poor communication. You don't step away from your station without telling the other person you're working with that they'll need to cover your responsibilities. At least to hand off a coffee. No excuse for the gross cup with dirty finger prints all over it.
I couldn't remember the last time I was this livid towards a business the way I am right now. I was hoping to build a great relationship with them because I own a business and often order in big bulk. Unfortunately, that changed as I will not be returning to this establishment. First of all, I would like to mention I'm not ignorant nor am I inconsiderate of company policy. However, I do not agree with the way they conduct their business. They supply bread, buns, etc. to stores like Gelson's Whole foods, which I normally buy from. I was searching for slider buns however, after checking 3 locations (La Canada, Reseda, Van Nuys) most of the stores were either sold out or expired (with a 02/16 date on them). I had called earlier today around 1:30pm 2:00pm to place an order for tomorrow (Saturday). I spoke to a young girl hoping she'd take my order but unfortunately she told me I couldn't place an order for Saturday because I had to order before 12pm? I'm sorry? But I'm not ordering a wedding cake. I'm ordering bread.... BREAD! You mean to tell me it takes almost a day a half to prepare/ bake bread?! I asked her even if I miss the cut off time by 1.5 hours? She responded with yes. Does that mean if I placed my order at 12, they immediately start working on my order? I'm confused. Make it make sense!! Although I live 52 miles away, I still was willing to make the drive out of pure desperation. I've ordered from multiple (small business) bakeries, from various sweets, cakes, desserts you name it! Most of the time it was hours before my event and somehow they made it happen. I've never had an issue, but how is it that this business (which supplies all of L.A) can not accommodate? Apparently if you call 30+ hours in advance to place a measly order, it's not enough time for fulfilment. Pros +1 star for slider bun size +1 star for great pretzel bun flavor Cons 1 star for expired products 1 star for unreasonable policy 1 star for unwillingness to accommodate an order 30+ hours in advance
I have been coming to Röckenwagner Bakery when I was in high school 2012/2013. It's now 2023 and the hazelnut croissants warm my soul the same way they did years ago. Everything is made fresh in the kitchen, I always come for the pastries and breakfast sandwiches. EVERYTHING is amazing. I have yet to dine in but plan on someday. The like does get long, the good stuff sells out fast also. The coffee is average, not horrible but also not super amazing. The to go section is great with salad options and breakfast yogurt that comes with fruit and granola (also made in house). The owner (I believe she is the owner) is active in her business and I absolutely love it. They even have their pretzel bread products in the local grocery stores and my gosh, they are fresh and tasty. I love this place so much and I am glad it hasn't left the neighborhood.
Went on a Friday at 10am and it wasn't crowded yet. I just grab a table and didn't have to wait long for our waiter. At the front entrance, there's a nice selection of ready-to-go meals (soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and other small sides) and a ton of artisan baked goods and desserts. They are popluar for their coffees and yes my hot vanilla latte was exceptional. They also sell groceries which is pretty cool. My pretzel croissant sandwich with a medium fried egg and a side of tater tots was so delicious. The croissant was fresh and flaky. Parking is either metered street parking or free parking in the surrounding residential streets (watch for street cleaning days). Their ready-to-go Turkey Reuben Sandwich and Cool Sesame Noodles with Chicken were also very tasty. Can't wait to go back.
I ate in the restaurant today. I ordered a BLTA sandwich that cost me about $17 and had absolutely no flavor. Then I ordered a slice of apple/almond tart to go, for $7, and found that it also has no flavor and has a soggy bottom. I will avoid this restaurant from now on.
