Contribute FeedbackSet in a former Wendy’s, Sam Choy's Kai Lanai boasts stunning sunset views, yet diners find the food experience inconsistent. Menu updates aim for casual dining, featuring decent drinks but food reminiscent of chain restaurants. While some dishes, particularly the fresh fish offerings, earn praise, others fall short—like the overpriced and poorly executed Crispy Duck. Service is generally attentive, and the lively brunch scene pleases visitors. Despite the beautiful setting and promise of decent meals, many suggest exploring other local options before returning, given the varied dining experiences.
My husband enjoyed his dinner at this restaurant, but unfortunately, I had the worst dining experience there. I ordered the Crispy Duck dish, but to my disappointment, half of it was actually chicken. The duck, which is supposed to be dark meat, was mixed with white meat and overly breaded, giving it a strange taste. It was clear that they were cutting costs by doing this. Considering the high prices at this restaurant, I expected better quality food. I strongly advise against ordering this dish.
The restaurant has a stunning view, excellent drinks, and delicious food. The staff is friendly and welcoming.
The previous Wendy's location has an impressive ambiance with a great view of the sunset. The food is good, though not outstanding. The service was attentive and considerate. There was a mistake with our wine order, but they made up for it by comping us 2 glasses, which was a nice gesture. The fish dishes were especially fresh and well prepared, with the fish trio being a particularly enjoyable combo. I recommend making a reservation for a front row table for the best experience.
Everything was fantastic except for the weather. We tried a couple of their signature drinks and three menu items. The Mai Tai was typical, but Hawaiian Mimosas were outstanding. Fried rice with eggs was good, but the Beef Stew omelette was inspired. Everything about a Sunday dinner with family wrapped in an omelette. We ended with coconut pineapple fritters, which turned out to be a perfect end. The local honey matched the fritters perfectly. Next time we’re on the big island it’s worth the two hour drive from Hilo.
We had brunch on a Sunday and were so pleased with the beautiful setting, delicious and generous portions and friendly service. The prices were very reasonable and all four members of our group were pleased with their selections which included a ham omelette, fried rice, and eggs Benedict. The reservation process made our seating so quick and efficient as well!
