The Fish Boat - Johnstown
The Fish Boat
Description
**Restaurant Review: A Mixed Bag of Experiences**
Nestled within vintage diner décor, this family-owned eatery boasts a blend of charm and history. While many patrons enjoy fantastic dishes like fried fish sandwiches and broiled scallops, the quality of service leaves much to be desired. Enthusiastic owners occasionally clash with diners, leading to mixed interactions. Although the food is praised for its affordability and generous portions, especially the intriguing fried oysters, service inconsistencies detract from the experience. Despite the warm ambiance, the restaurant struggles with customer relations, making it a spot that could benefit from attention to both its cuisine and its staff interactions.

The food was average. The fried oysters, shown in the picture below, were quite interesting. However, the staff were outstanding and truly deserve five stars. I gave the restaurant 1 star because when I inquired about the oysters' origin, the owner responded with, "Why do you want to know?" When I explained my curiosity, the owner dismissively said, "East coast," and walked away. I definitely won’t be returning.
I wish I could give The Fish Boat zero stars! My entire experience was awful. When I called to place a takeout order, the woman on the phone was very rude and rushed me constantly. When I arrived to pick up my order, the staff were yelling at each other, and not a single person smiled. In fact, when I showed up 10 minutes early and asked if I could pay and wait, I was met with attitude and scolding. While I waited, an elderly man approached the counter to look at the menu, and what I assume was the owner barked at him to "SPEAK!" The three employees were rude to every customer who came in. I couldn’t wait to leave. I’ve never experienced such terrible customer service in my life! To make matters worse, the food was awful. I ordered chicken tenders, fries, and mac and cheese—three tiny tenders, a tiny cup of mac and cheese, and a few undercooked fries. My coworkers got the fish sandwiches, which were small, and despite requesting tartar sauce, we never received any. Save yourself the trouble and dignity—do NOT visit The Fish Boat!
I stumbled upon The Fish Boat by chance and was immediately intrigued. We tried the soup of the day, a cream of crab, along with a fish bowl from the menu. Both were fantastic—fresh, hot, and prepared to order. My two little ones and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. They also served the best chips! Thank you, The Fish Boat!
The food was freshly prepared when I ordered, and the restaurant was very clean. The prices were fair, and the meal was excellent.
