What Anonym dislikes about Onomichi U2:
With my (non-vegan) family for dinner. Asked the staff what they had, what was vegan, about some difficulties with translation, I asked myself what was vegetarian and they pointed me to a salad, a vegetable soup and a pizza. I thought the soup was my safest bet without egg and no milk I had right. Except the soup came with big ham. My father's tired. If you are planning to eat here, just check your food maybe, or try... I came at 6pm and noticed a few options an upscale restaurant just called the restaurant , a cafe called Yard Cafe that only serves drinks and macarons from the case, and a deli market. There is a salad at the restaurant and they probably can make a pizza vegetarian, but no substantial food or even sandwich available from the cafe or market. There might be some packaged nibbles in the market that are vegetarian or vegan. The restaurant is pretty pricey.
...was so good. Help yourself to fresh salad fruit, juices, soup, and delicious baked goods everything tasted homemade and local. Best start to the day so far after 4 weeks in Japan.
Stopped in here after cycling from Imabari to Onomichi. Nice atmosphere, patio, and a few shops inside. We had no trouble communicating with our particular server. We ordered a pasta and asked for no fish meat and they happily added vegetables for us which was great. They have 2 veg friendly pizzas on the menu, Margherita and Lemon Salt. We had the Lemon Salt and it was delicious after a long day of riding. Might be tough for vegans here.
Went here with my (non-vegan) family for dinner. Asked the staff what they had which was vegan, after some trouble with translation, I settled for asking what was vegetarian and they pointed me to a salad, a vegetable soup and a pizza. I thought the soup would be my safest bet with no egg and no dairy, which I guess I was right. Except the soup came out with large chunks of ham. My father ended up eating it. If you do plan on eating here, just double check your food perhaps, or try to find a staff with a bit more English. Next time, I’ll be sticking with my translation app I think! Portions were also a bit small for the non-vegan food as well, if you are planning on dining with non-vegan friends The non-vegan food, did look very nice, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to get through the language barrier
It’s not cheap, and the website is a nightmare to navigate in English, but it’s a really cool place to stay if you’re cycling the Shinamani Kaido (and if you’re not, but there’s not that much else in Onomichi). The old warehouse vibe is great, rooms are really well done (although ours was a little dark), and food in the cafe, bakery, restaurant, and for breakfast is brilliant. They can also cater for gluten free baking rice bread and matcha cake in the bakery for breakfast and doing gluten free pasta for dinner. Make sure to notify them in advance and specifically request these items though.
