Contribute FeedbackI'm surprised to come across this page. Faros Takeaway used to be my favorite fish and chip shop for many years, but that was quite a while ago, as it closed over a decade ago. I remember it had a sign that read "Home of the Yerros." Yerros is the Greek word for kebab. I would often go there for a yerros alongside the classic fish and chips wrapped in paper the old-fashioned way, along with a bottle of Saxby's ginger beer. The takeaway shut its doors sometime in the early 2000s and was eventually demolished. Now, 85 Maitland Road is just a parking lot next to a café. Islington has changed significantly since I moved to Newcastle in 1982. Around 2005, I saw the Greek lady who worked there or owned the establishment at a medical center I frequented. I'm not sure if she recognized me, and I didn't have the courage to approach her. Just before Faros Takeaway closed, Islington Takeaway opened across the street in what used to be a corner store. Last year, it closed unexpectedly and was converted into another café earlier this year. I suspect that traditional fish and chip shops might be fading away. I wonder if anyone else remembers places like The Parthenon Milk Bar.
