Winking Lizard Tavern - Independence
Winking Lizard Tavern
Description
Nestled in Independence, this lively sports bar boasts an inviting atmosphere with two expansive bars, making it ideal for happy hour or casual dining. Diners rave about the delicious buffalo chicken salad and hearty tavern fare, complemented by attentive, friendly staff. However, some experiences are marred by concerns over hygiene and aggressive service, particularly during closing hours. Despite these mixed reviews, the bar's lively ambiance and unique touches like a resident iguana create a memorable outing. A suggestion for the menu to cater more to low-carb diets would enhance the experience, appealing to a wider range of patrons.

This restaurant has a lot of questionable individuals working there, most of whom will help themselves to your food. The kitchen staff appear to be unhygienic as well. Be prepared to find items in your meal that you didn't order.
After a long work day, a friend and I, who are working in the city for a few months, decided to visit a tavern within walking distance of our accommodation. As we were on night shift, we finished work at midnight and thought of grabbing some wings and a beer at the tavern. However, when we entered the tavern, a lady there rudely informed us that the kitchen was closed and directed us to another bar on the other side of the house. We complied and went to the other bar, where the same lady then told us that they couldn't serve us because we appeared intoxicated for our safety. We explained that we were just working and hadn't had anything to drink, but the lady seemed unconvinced. Feeling confused and slighted, we decided to leave and return to our room. I later called the tavern and spoke to the manager to explain the situation, but was told that we appeared "bewildered," which was embarrassing. This experience made us feel unwelcome and caused us to reconsider spending our money at this establishment in the future.
I recently visited Sport in Independence and was impressed by the two large bars and the great service. It's a perfect spot for a happy hour with colleagues. My only suggestion would be to have more options on the menu that cater to low-carb diets, but the buffalo chicken salad with homemade dressing was delicious and satisfying.
Very disorganized hostessing. A 50 minute wait with 8 tables open and still got pushed back another 15 min while others got seated who arrived after us. Some persistent complaining and discussion got us seated around 34 min into it, but waited 45 min for our order to come out. The food and drinks were too mediocre for that kind of wait.
