Contrary to what others may say, this restaurant does offer vegan options. All you have to do is ask. We tried the tofu appetizer, papaya salad (made without fish sauce), spicy basil vegetables, and vegan fried rice – all of which were consistently outstanding. View all feedback.
What NIBsmf doesn't like about Thai Recipe:
I was unsure about trying this restaurant after reading a previous review mentioning their frequent use of oyster or fish sauce. However, with limited options in the area, I decided to go in and ask about alternatives. I was informed that they could prepare the vegetable garden dish (vegetables in garlic sauce) without any such sauce, so I ordered that with tofu. My vegan family, consisting of my wife and I who have been vegan for 25 years, and our three vegan children, along with my girlfriend's mother and omnivorous father, were very hungry after kayaking. Despite some negative reviews, we decided to give this restaurant a try and we were pleasantly surprised. The food is all made to order and they were able to accommodate our vegan preferences by preparing dishes without fish or oyster sauce. I enjoyed the yellow curry tofu, my 13-year-old had veggie rice wrap rolls, my 11-year-old had pad thai, and my 8-year-old shared some fried tofu with us. My wife opted for red curry tofu and everything was completely vegan. I even tried a bit of everything and couldn't tell the difference. My girlfriend's mother was also happy with her gluten-free green curry. Overall, everyone left satisfied.
The dish was not very flavorful and only had a few pieces of tofu, but it did contain a good assortment of vegetables. Additionally, it was on the expensive side as I paid $15 for it.
I attempted to eat here tonight because their website says that they can “make most entrees vegetarian” and to notify them of any allergies. However, when I asked the server more specifics in terms of is there any fish sauce, any oyster sauce in their curries or stir fry…it turns out that they always use oyster sauce. They think that by not using fish sauce it’s vegetarian (but if it still has oyster that obviously is not true). She said she could make soups with veggie stock but I did not trust it at that point. They were nice though and at least made me a steamed vegetables, tofu and brown rice plate with plain soy sauce. And their mango sticky rice is just coconut milk and vegan. But beware that everything else is non veg!
I ordered Pad Thai with tofu as my meat option. The servings were huge (which is great! , but it was 97% noodles, 2.5% tofu and 0.5% veggies (which is not great, as I WISH Pad Thai would be 50% noodles and 50% tofu veggies The flavor was pretty good. Since there was so much noodles, I have leftovers that I’ll cook some veggies to go into tomorrow. The Pad Thai price was typical slightly high because it’s in the Tahoe area, and considering that I was pretty much all noodles but not terribly high priced. I also got spring rolls, and those were pretty yummy. And the rolls’ dipping sauce was unique. It was peanutty, sweet and a little spicey, but more sweet than I’m used to, and by the end of dipping the first roll, the sauce’s sweetness totally reminded me of jelly, and I had the sensation I was eating peanut butter and jelly! Oh, like most restaurants, their takeout to go packaging containers are TERrible. Styrofoam and plastic wrap. Bummer : The staff were very friendly which is always nice and appreciated :
