Hi,The restaurant is a great place to experience real regional cooking like Handkäs mit Musik. That is not only German food it is regional Hessen food. Try a glas of refreshing apple vine mixed with soda (sauer gespritzter) or if you prefer get the sweet mix. The historic location is at the central place in the old town Idstein. They also offer snacks and small dishes. View all feedback.

Nice staff, very fresh salad but the vegetarian options are limited. The quiche wasn't good. But the rest superb.
I first visited Idstein last fall at the suggestion of a co-worker and was disappointed when Zur Peif was closed. The pictures and reviews on Tripadvisor drew me to it and we did eventually get there a couple of weeks ago with some relatives who were visiting from the States. It was cool and rainy so when we went inside it was a welcome respite from the elements. Iris, the owner, took care of us and she was a lot of fun--she engaged us on the history of the house and restaurant, the local Hessian cuisine, and the Jazzfest in July among other things. We asked her for recommendations and they were all good. The service was very good as was the food, just not spectacular, hence 4 stars. For what it was, traditional Hessian food, and I don't mean that in a bad way, it was very well prepared and presented. I'm glad we found Zur Peif open, I enjoyed our meal there, it was very reasonably priced, and the atmosphere and service were extremely pleasant. I would definitely go back.

I stayed in Idstein for one night on my way back home to London and the hotel recommended Zur Peif in the centre of the town. When I arrived the place was full except one table and Iris the English speaking owner seated me immediately outside amongst around 20 other tables just off the small town square. and recommended the local beer which was wonderful. There was a menu and a specials board and Iris recommended the Beef Soup and Lamb Casserole both of which were outstanding (especially the lamb) . Looking at the other diners who appeared to be German everything looked fresh and typical of the area and there were not many empty plates !The service was relaxed but efficient and the cost of the meal with 2 large beers was less than 25 euros and for the standard of a 3 course meal and the wonderful setting I was very happy . Highly recommend
