During the 1970s and 1980s, KFC experienced mixed results in the U.S. as it went through various changes in corporate ownership, often lacking experience in the restaurant business. In the early 1970s, KFC was sold to the spirits distributor Heublein, which was subsequently acquired by the R. J. Reynolds food and tobacco conglomerate, before ultimately being sold to PepsiCo. The chain continued its overseas expansion, and in 1987, KFC became the first Western restaurant to open in China. In 1997, PepsiCo spun off its restaurants division, which became Tricon Global Restaurants, rebranded as Yum! Brands in 2002.
