Bar Basque is a casual harbor-front eatery located next to Hondarribia's main beach. To access this location, you need to pay for parking by the Polideportivo (Sports complex) and climb down a flight of stairs to access the waterfront and this bar. We had a lovely outdoor shaded table with a view of the harbor and the ocean beyond, able to see Hendaye, France. Bar Basque features nice fresh salads that had tuna, corn, carrots, hard boiled egg, and asparagus. They also had pintxos included yummy fried calamari and chicken wings. Bar Basque also has desserts such as ice cream. With a bottle of wine, what more could one ask for?
This is not a posh restaurant, its a basic Taberna. Its modern and the moment we entered we were made welcome, the owner could speak some english, who took great trouble to explain the menu, we wanted the tapas and wasn't disappointed, the various dishes was very tasty and the chips were great, they are their own, not shop bought, try them. Our second visit we ordered a sandwich, a sandwich it was not, it was like a soft bun, the size of a dinner plate, crammed full of fillings, ours was chicken, ham, tomatoes, onions, sauces and relish. We had large glasses of wine to wash it all down, everything was very good value for money. During the week it was moderately busy, Friday it was packed, which tells its own story, full of locals. A word of warning, don't use your gps to find it, they have it completely wrong, go to the beach area and the car park, there are a number of modern eating places, the Basque Taberna is opposite the sports, on the lower section, overlooking the yacht harbour.
Full of locals which is always a good sign, VERY cheap drinks and tapas looked good, but not an evening meal , moreso for snacks. The waitress was very friendly and tried valiantly to help us with our wifi connection. Chilled out place.
After arriving in Hondarribia and settling into our hotel we went with a local friend to one of her favorite places, the Basque Taberna. At her suggestion we tried the local wine, Txakoli, and ordered salads. Service was prompt and friendly. The café was bright and clean. And best of all, the salads were large and delicious...served with fresh bread. The café is located across from the small port and close to the beach. I have a feeling this is a popular spot in the evenings, too.
