It was hard not to just let ourselves inhale the pork steak! It was that good. The pork easily fell apart with a fork and had an excellent bite. My husband liked the sweet sauce and thought it had molasses in it. I mixed the tangy mild sauce with the sweet for a savory flavor. The sides were okay. It was a different BBQ experience since we have never had two-inch thick pork steak before. It was a treat!
Interesting place to go. We have tried Strawberries BBQ rub before (very highly recommend), but had never eaten at the restaurant. Holcomb Missouri is a place you have to find as you have no other reason to visit. The house specialty is a smoked pork steak (a staple in Missouri if you are not from the state). I was unfamiliar with a smoked version, normally it is grilled. The pork steak was more like pulled pork once you cut into it, not like the traditional pork steak that would cut like, well, a steak. The flavor was good, but was a little dry. Others had ribs and several different sides. The sides received good reviews. This is definitely a “country” place, with very attentive service, but the gnats and flies were a little much at times. If you do not go to Holcomb try and find the BBQ rub at a store or online. That is truly a winner.
Going downhill fast. Just a well known name living off and outdated reputation. Scalloped potatoes came out all but icebox cold. For the first time ever my wife and I both HAD to cut the pork steak with a knife. It tasted like it was cooked in an oven. Thiswas not bbq. After waiting 45 minutes what a letdown. Even the toast was burnt. We live within just a few minutes of this placeand ate here many many times over the years. I'm not sure what has changed so badly in this place in recent years. But it isn'tthe same place anymore.
