The lunch we shared after quite an upsetting morning was really memorable and certainly calmed my nerves. The lunch was so interesting and delicious that the bad experience earlier in the day was forgotten for the moment. Staff were really friendly and helpful. View all feedback.
What Oma Ward doesn't like about Mai Ake:
I used to love this place for many years, initially for their cheap and cheerful authentic cuisine' then they moved and became a more refined but still reasonably priced Thai staple. This most recent move sees Mai Ake now located in the old Blue Skies' location on the waterfront. I went there tonight for dinner and it looks the same decor wise but the menu has changed. Most notably the huge price hike. The mains rang... View all feedback.
I don't think that my wife and I are very fussy but the meal did not meet with our expectations maybe that's some dishes are prepared differently in Hobart as compared to Sydney. Generally the area around the waterfront house prices up to 50% more then other areas

Despite an empty dining room on a Saturday night, we gave Mai Ake a chance. The entrees were prompt, but fairly uninspired and came with VERY dry julienne roots and lettuce, a thoughtless garnish which was unfortunately then served as garnish for the mains too. The mains disappointed - the salty deep fried beef in fried rice was neither salty or crispy and tasted a little old, and the chicken drumstick with tamarind sauce on the menu was clearly not chicken drumstick but breast strip on a skewer, and the sticky rice in a bamboo basket was curiously wrapped in plastic (maybe it makes it easier to microwave?) and barely non existent. It was hard to identify any specific flavours in any of the dishes, and there was certainly little of the zing and freshness that is the signature of good Thai food. Hard to say if the food was mediocre because there was no-one there, or if there was no-one there because the food is mediocre, but without a significant improvement in the food it may be a irrelevant distinction. On a positive note, the service was efficient and friendly.
This restaurant is one of the best I've eaten at. Everything about this was fantastic. The service was attentive but not obtrusive, the food was divine, the wine list extensive and very reasonably priced. Will definately eat there again. Can't wait!!
Mai Ake is great. We have had lots of meals there including 8 of us for New Year's Eve. We also attended a birthday party there where the staff brought around beautiful finger food. The food is always hot, tasty and fresh. The host, Gunny, is delightful as are the other staff.
