Great place on 1st floor above a meat restaurant on the ground in tourist district. Inexpensive food and grog (rum with fresh lemon juice D12000). Good pizza pasta. Tasty Sheppard's Pie made with vegs lots of onion with potatoe and cheese crust served in hot ramekin. Ate there often View all feedback.
What Quế Bành doesn't like about An Lac Chay:
My first meal in Saigon was a huge letdown for several reasons. I only chose this restaurant because it was close to where I was staying, and to my surprise, I discovered that they not only serve vegan/vegetarian food, but also meat. This was confusing to me, as the Vietnamese word 'Chay' typically means vegetarian. The menu displayed outside the restaurant even listed a variety of meat dishes. This was unacceptable.... That was my first meal in saigon and I am extremely disappointed for many reasons. I was just there because it was close to where I stayed and I also want to warn the rest of the vegan traveling out there that this ice cream not only serve vegan / vegetarian eating, but I realized that they also serve meat at the same time. I was very confused as the word chay' vegetarian means in Vietnamese. they have a few menu outside the kitchen and one of the menu list a lot of meat dishes. That's bad, really bad. they should not call themselves a vegan or vegetarian at first place! I ordered pineapple frying in a cocose shell and it was the worst fired rice of all time! they avoid this place at all costs. there are much better vegan restaurants around district 1. updated by the previous review on 2018-05-15
This place is not only vegetarian; they also serve meat. they have a lot of directed, including western witnesses. eating was nice enough maisfritter baked mushrooms, chilli strips, for appetizer then thai curry. the curry was delicious sauce, but only a few pieces of kartoffel and carrot in. the service was somewhat slow, but we were in a group for the night, so it was not important. as with most places in this opposite very cheap £5 ea including wine
Various dishes, nice owners, great spring rolls and sauces
I only ate here because I was in the area and really hungry, so I used Happy Cow to find the nearest veg place. The place doesn't stand out, it's pretty dingy and dirty, but I suppose it's reasonably priced for a place in the backpacker's area. I had a pretty underwhelming veg burrito (possibly the limpest and plainest burrito I've ever had). However, there was quite a lot on offer for vegans/vegetarians and it's true that I didn't get to sample more than the burrito, so I can't judge how the other food is (perhaps the Viet food is better). I guess if you're in the area and want something cheap by D1 standards it's okay, but seriously, vegans/vegetarians, get out of Pham Ngu Lao and see what great veg food the city has to offer!!
A great little spot. Make sure you go up the stairs to the second floor. The downstairs part is meat as well as vego. English speaking staff. Tasty, interesting food. Pretty cheap overall. Worth the visit for sure.
