Reuben's Mexican Food - Hilo

Had the Chile Relleno and chicken enchilada and were delicious. Rice and beans seemed to not be up to par. Doesn’t provide free chips, salsa or any dips for free. Overall good taste but the place has room to improve.

Place definitely depends on tourists, none of the locals have ever suggested this place. But because I was desperate for some sort of Mexican food this is the closest it comes to. The red salsa is good nice and has a good spice to it. Which is what kept me coming back. Tried to visit a 3rd time place was closed yet google said they were open. Then today we had to wait nearly 40 minutes for a table only to find out the waiter seated other groups of 2 before us….We finally get a table I enjoy my chips and salsa but will never come back to dine in…isn’t worth the wait especially when they only have 2 waiters for about 10-12 tables….guess an employee quit or was sick or owner doesn’t want to hire another waitress/waiter…whatever the reason I don’t care bad service makes me never want to dine here again absolutely NOT WORTH GOING MORE THAN ONCE. Because if you do want to go back they might be randomly closed or make you wait for your table, forget they had you waiting and seat 3 or more people before you. With all that said totally ruins the mood of wanting to eat here again ever

Food was good, however, not a great place to go if you are actually Mexican. I was surprised to see Spanish-speaking people treated with such disrespect here. I don’t speak Spanish very well, but it was strange that a table that was clearly from Mexico was unable to converse with the staff in Spanish. Whoever the server was in the red shirt on Saturday, December 17th took it upon herself to drop the bill, and refused to serve them another round. They were intoxicated, but not to any greater degree than another table of mainland patrons who continued receiving service. The only difference between the two was the language spoken at the table. The whole experience was mind blowing for me. I will never return. Why in the world would you work at a Mexican restaurant if you don’t like Mexicans? Perhaps it might be a good idea to learn to speak Spanish. At least one of the staff members should speak better Spanish than I do. What a pathetic and sad experience to have in what is typically a very accepting State.

My husband and I moved here from Los Angeles and missed Mexican food. I remembered this place from my high school days and that my friend really liked it. We decided yesterday to get out, and it hit the place full! The food was very delicious! I had the #16-two crab enchiladas. My mother had the Chile Relleno small plate, and my husband had the #6-two soft tacos (chicken) plate. We all enjoyed our meals and said that we will add this to our list of regular meeting places. Do not expect fine food here - simply good, hole-in- the wall delicious food. Very recommended!

Reuben's Mexican Food, we had the Beef Enchiladas w/Beans Rice, also had a Cheese Quesadilla, both were OK. Service was good and quick.
