While some reviewers have criticized the food, mentioning tough and old chicken Katsu and unsatisfactory burgers, others rave about the delicious bread and cookies. The bakery also offers a variety of other items like pickles and ulu bread. Customers appreciate the warm and welcoming service, with one reviewer even mentioning that they will be back for more. While some have noted the lack of restroom facilities on-site, overall, Low International Foods is a must-visit spot in Hilo for those looking for tasty treats at reasonable prices.
Preface: this review was in the drafts from 8/9/22. I'm also Chinese and Pacific Islander.Ask any first or second generation Asian and they will agree that the best Asian restaurants have around 3 stars and terrible customer service because their food will prove they are worthy. This would be an example.I'm not going to lie that the restaurant looks a little dingy from the outside and can be easy to overlook, but at least give the rainbow and taro breads a try! The highlights are the amount of food they give you and the rainbow bread. Even though it looks burned, I couldn't taste that and the toast was so buttery and delicious. Kalua pork and rice was also great! It was takeout only at the time (not sure about now), but I'm sure it'll be even better on the spot!
This is a small mom and pop bakery. They require masks and even sell some if you've forgotten one! They are super cute and we really enjoyed our visit. We ordered the rainbow loaf and got a few different kinds of shortbread cookies. We were too full to order their savory lunch plates so can't comment on that. I highly recommend coming here right before you go home, buying a loaf of bread, and freezing it before you fly home. We did just this and the bread was still super soft. Here's a pic of it at home, right before I slathered it in lilikoi butter!
Is it just me or do all the breads taste the same? Doesn't matter if you order rainbow, taro, whatever...it all tastes like sweet bread. Yeah it's soft and everyone we gift it to loves it, but I think I like Punalu'u better, which you can find at many locations.
I can't say much about food here, but I hear it's pretty solid! I come here almost exclusively to the rainbow bread. Usually a whole crate of eating plus a foliage while I'm in Hilo. This is a must for me when I come here. During this last visit I had some of the cookies and they were AMAZING. Well, I guess I'm coming for bread and cookies! Try the food next time! The menu was a good size and I love a good dinner!
Delicious Rainbow Bread! Soft and sweet. Every day always freshly baked. I always get a box from 4 back to Honolulu. Fast and friendly service. Shop is dated.
