Chef Tan - Highland Park

Really nice place with delicious food and friendly service. this restaurant has a whole vegetarian section and a large section where they can make any dish with tofu or bean curd instead of meat. large selection of vegetarian and vegan appetizers also available.

I had Tan Chef on my wishlist for a while and finally had the opportunity to visit after a trip to Rutgers this week. The restaurant offers a rare combination of delicious, authentic dishes in a pleasant ambiance. We tried their mapo tofu, Bok Choy with garlic, fried fish, and a classic beef and paprika dish (whose exact name I can't recall) - and everything was delicious! The menu is extensive, with photos and descriptions in both English and Chinese. If I lived or worked closer, I would definitely visit more often. I look forward to returning in the near future.

Nice Chinese restaurant. The prices were expensive, but the food, service and atmosphere were all good! They were very helpful to go through the menu when I explained that I am vegan and wanted to understand my options better. They gave me many possibilities and alternatives to some of their listed articles.

Delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes. The shredded potatoes, seaweed salad and eggplant are all excellent.

In a COVID setting, this place is pretty socially distanced and everyone is masked up unless they are eating. UPDATE not every waiter wears a mask but maybe about half of them still do as of June 2021. Great place if you’re looking for some spicy food! I really liked the Beef and Tripe appetizer. It is a cold and spicy dish that gives your mouth a slight numbing. The dandan noodles were also a delicious appetizer. Eggplant with garlic sauce is my go to dish and theirs is tasty. Was not a huge fan of the spicy and crispy short ribs. The taste was great but there isn’t much meat, just cartilage and breading. Majority of the staff was nice but there was one waiter who was pretty rude. Still, I definitely recommend a try if you are in the area.
