Harvard General Store
Harvard General Store
Description
In this charming New England general store turned kitchen, locals gather for robust coffee, outstanding bakery items, and made-to-order breakfasts and lunches backed by a curated wine and beer selection. Farm-to-table finds and an expanding refrigerated case add freshness, while outdoor seating makes it a sunny-day destination. Though warm, trendy, and steadily improving, patrons report inconsistent service, occasional long waits, and hit-or-miss cooked items and pricing—note the kitchen closes in mid-afternoon.

Adorable cafe with delicious food. Everything my party tried for breakfast, we liked. My elderly parents really liked the ambiance of the place, and it was clearly a locals ' spot. Prices of food were all reasonable (bordering on low) for the quality and quantity of what you get. The building is wheelchair accessible with a shallow/easier ramp in. Cafe tables are to the left around a shelf with plenty of space to navigate that. It might be too tight (or close to) to browse the market section, but the cafe section is plenty roomy. Counter for ordering is accessible height, as are cafe tables, I believe. Counter to pick up food might be challenging. I get the feeling staff would gladly offer to bring food to your table though. There 's also a bakery section with some breakfast things (croissants, pan au chocolat, scones in 6 flavors, etc) and many desserts (cookies, brownies and bars, small whoopie pies, a pie, crumble, etc). All fresh, with a small basket near the register of day-old items available as well. They sell frozen pizzas (several flavors) and frozen cookie dough. A sign said gluten free available for the pizzas; not sure if that applied to the cookie dough too. Some of the hot menu items were vegetarian (designed that way, not just sans meat), with the option of making them vegan. Some hot and bakery items were gluten-free. Most options could be made dairy-free in the usual no cheese way; not sure about vegan or dairy-free bakery options one was or the other. The coffee/tea and hot food selections were larger than I expected, while the store part was smaller. Nice to see that the majority of products they sell, both food and not, are created by named artisans (who I believe are all local as well). As visible in the photos, there 's a nice package/alcohol section to buy various beers (mostly local, all chilled) and wines (good variety, some chilled). Note that alcohol CANNOT be opened or consumed in the store/ on premises , presumably just a convenient pickup spot. There was a sign to go upstairs where I think they had more beer and wine? But I didn 't go up, so idk. Cafe had around 8 two-person tables, a couple of which were pushed together for groups of 3-4. It 's the perfect size to be full when busy and feel comfortable when not (and I say this as an obese person who hates feeling crowded in restaurants). Cafe tables are next to a couple panel windows, offering a nice view of fall trees (in autumn) and a small intersection and lawn. It 's great lighting because of that. Oh, and staff were attentive and super nice. Seemed like there were enough employees to manage the customer size at the time too (very quickly), though it wasn 't crazy busy when I was there. Overall, really enjoyed it for a quick sit-down bagel sandwich and coffee. Would be a great place to swing by for a bite as a tourist, and a nice chill spot for locals to meet with friends over coffee. I 'll definitely try this place again in future and would recommend locals add it to their rotation.
I stopped in at The Harvard General Store for a coffee and breakfast sandwich , both were excellent and high quality ! The store was vibrant with all kinds of people coming and going! This is a gem for the Town of Harvard; you can get veggies , milk , sundries, ice cream , fresh cooked sandwiches , breakfast and pizzas, etc . Scott Hayward et all has done an exceptional job bringing going this diamond in the rough back to life!
The problem with good reviews is that they lead to high expectations. I hadn’t been to the Harvard General for a while, but had a hankering for an outdoor lunch. Inside, everything looks and smells great, per usual. But the $16 turkey burger that was served up today was pretty abysmal. About a quarter inch thick, on a greasy brioche soaked with a bbq sauce, topped with one slice of apple and a few huge rough cut shreds of red cabbage. It was thus described: THAI TURKEY BURGER Green onions. fresh green apple, Asian inspired coleslaw dressing. I ate the patty and apple, nibbled on a bit of the bun. Left hungry. Definitely have no hankering to return for lunch any time soon again. Too bad.
